Description

Heliodora, een Berliner Weisse

History:
Heliodora waited restlessly at the end of the road. In late February, his father always brought him sanguinelli oranges from the market. While the mountains were still covered in snow, in the middle of winter, those blood-red fruits seemed to announce the warm breeze of spring. The history of orange trees in the Mediterranean is long. A thousand years ago, they came from China, where they were a bitter fruit used as a medicine and a seasoning. They adapted so well to their new home that they spontaneously produced a large number of new varieties, until the Italian botanist Gian Battista Ferrari first described the red pigment in citrus fruits in 1646. The different types of blood oranges were transported on sailing ships for centuries and became popular throughout Europe because of their durability on long journeys. But Heliodora never forgot them. The Mediterranean sun had a gift in store for her in Altea, where she came across the trees that had intrigued her since childhood. Now, every February, she goes to her centuries-old orchard with the enthusiasm of a child to pick the Sanguinelli oranges that go into this Berliner Weisse. A wheat beer made according to a centuries-old recipe that was about to disappear at the beginning of the 20th century. The wine is soft, refreshing and slightly acidic, with a touch of colour and aroma that these very special citrus fruits give. Prussian tradition and Mediterranean character.
